OUR STORY

Where do you go to find the best framing in Nelson?  Look no further than here at The Framing Rooms.  The talents of five people combine to bring you great workmanship and advice.  The Framing Rooms began life as Richmond Picture Framers almost fifteen years ago. The team then spent a few years at 96 Collingwood Street but we now call 33 Wakatu Lane home.  The high ceiling, industrial space is perfect for a picture framers workshop, giving us lots of room for our long lengths of mouldings and numerous workbenches.  We share the space with the Quiet Dog Gallery so you can enjoy looking at artwork when you come in with your framing.

Heading up the team is James Taylor who began framing in London more than 30 years ago.  He trained with John Jones, one of the premier framers in the Capital.  James worked on custom frames for major artists including Francis Bacon and Hockney.

James is a Guild Commended Framer (GCF) so has bags of expertise to share with you.   He is the chosen framer for many of Nelson’s leading galleries, artists and collectors because of his experience in framing fine art.

“It’s wonderful to have a framer who goes the extra mile for you and helps to show your work in it’s best light.  My work is selling well at exhibition and I do think that the great framing and presentation is supporting that.”  Fleur Woods

LaVerne Clark trained in Auckland 20 years ago and is also a Guild Commended Framer.  Her talents include mounting fine art and delicate fabrics so they look stunning and are well protected.

She loves the design aspect of framing and relishes the challenge of working with the more unusual pieces people bring in for framing.

“Thank you for the fabulous framing you have done of my Dad & Gran’s Medals. I took a photo of them and sent it to my Dad so he could share my delight. He is overjoyed with the result and it takes a lot for my Dad to compliment anyone or anything. You’ve done a fantastic job and it’s very much appreciated. Jess, Richmond

Gill Starling is often the person you’ll first meet when you bring your artwork in for framing.  Her talent is making the whole process of choosing how to frame your work easy and enjoyable.  Gill is also Gallery Director for our sister business – the Quiet Dog Gallery.  If you need input with choosing some special works for your home or business she will be delighted to help.  See more about the artists represented here https://www.quietdoggallery.co.nz/

Angela Galbreath is our frame maker extraordinaire.  No frame is too large or complicated for Ange to tackle.  She can stretch works on canvas and has developed a real expertise in making the stylish tray frames that are so popular right now.  Ange is never happier than with a power tool in her hand so she is the perfect person for this job.

Steve Bailey joined our team in 2020. He has chosen to move to Nelson from Auckland and we couldn’t be happier that he has brought his considerable skills and experience to us.  Steve worked with John Leech framing fine art for Auckland’s major galleries, artists and auction houses.  There’s really nothing that he can’t take on.  Steve has two more strings to his bow.  He is our go to guy when customers need picture hanging and he is also an experienced restorer of antique frames.  If you’d like his input please get in touch.

The Framing Rooms really is the place to visit for beautiful framing and creative ideas. So whatever you need to frame, whether it’s a family heirloom, a piece of fine art, a rugby jersey or a certificate, the team are here to help.
