Our Story

The Framing Rooms is a space grounded in craftsmanship, care, and a thoughtful approach to both framing and art.

At the bench, there is over 60 years of combined experience in framing. With decades of hands-on practice, the work spans everything from bespoke framing to fine art prepared for galleries across Aotearoa.

With a shared commitment to doing things properly, each frame is carefully considered, quietly supporting and enhancing the work it holds.

Alongside the workshop, Quiet Dog Gallery continues as a space for considered, contemporary work, supporting artists and creating a welcoming environment for clients and community alike.

The Framing Rooms and Quiet Dog Gallery have been shaped over time into a special place with a strong reputation, and we acknowledge the care and commitment of Gill Starling and James Taylor in building it.

The Team

Steve Bailey — Head Framer

Steve is a master framer with over 30 years of experience and co-owner of The Framing Rooms, bringing deep technical skill and a careful eye to every piece that comes through the workshop. He spent more than half of his career at John Leech Framing in Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand’s oldest framing business, where he framed fine art for leading galleries throughout the country.

He has been part of The Framing Rooms team since 2020, contributing to its reputation for quality framing. With a strong passion for bespoke framing, Steve combines traditional craftsmanship with a thoughtful, practical approach to each work.

Annie Watson — Framer and Gallery Manager

Annie is an experienced framer with over 30 years in the craft. We look forward to sharing more about her work and approach soon.

Hayley Samuel — Co-owner

Hayley brings a strategic and values-led approach to The Framing Rooms, with a background in leadership across the health and not-for-profit sectors. With over two decades of experience, she has worked across governance, service development, and national initiatives.

Her interest in the arts has developed alongside this work, with a focus on building spaces that are thoughtful, inclusive, and sustainable. At The Framing Rooms, Hayley works across the business, supporting day-to-day operations and contributing to the development of Quiet Dog Gallery.

Gracie — Support Crew

Gracie is part of the support crew at The Framing Rooms. Still working towards becoming a Quiet Dog, she appears from time to time, drawn to canine company, sunlight, and anyone carrying even the smallest morsel.
